Where Insight Meets Melody:
A Four-Chapter Journey of Musical Dialogue

We are delighted to present a retrospective of the Yunyin Zhixing Lecture Concert Series—a unique format designed to bridge musical performance with intellectual inquiry. To date, we have successfully held four editions, bringing together over 50 exceptional musicians, scholars, and practitioners from world-renowned institutions including the Royal College of Music, Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Manchester, University of York, University of Edinburgh, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Florida, Central Conservatory of Music, and Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Together, we have created deeply immersive artistic experiences that resonate long after the final note fades.

The Fourth Lecture Concert

"Sound-Knowing Action" World Music Edition: A Sonic Feast Spanning East and West

On May 4, 2025, concert-lecture series presented a World Music edition at RNCM. This event brought together outstanding young musicians and scholars, weaving an auditory journey for the audience that transcended cultures, eras, and instrumental families through insightful commentary and exquisite performances.
Vocal Performances: Echoes Across Time
Operatic Classic: Yiyi Zhang, a DPhil candidate in Archaeology at Oxford, presented both a lecture and performance on the timeless melodies of Puccini's opera Turandot.

Ancient Poetry, New Voice: Xinyun Liu from the Harbin Conservatory of Music interpreted the emotional nuances of ancient poetry through her analysis and rendition of "Yu Mei Ren • Listening to the Rain."

East-West Dialogue by Singing: Hailu Ni, a Vocal PhD candidate at the University of Manchester, offered a comparative performance of the Chinese art song "Alone in the West Chamber" alongside selections from Handel and Mozart.

Kunqu Treasure: Wei Jie, a renowned Kunqu performer based in the UK, delved into the artistry of the classic aria "Zao Luo Pao" from The Peony Pavilion, showcasing the beauty of this Eastern dramatic tradition.

Instrumental Interplay: Where Instruments Collide, Ideas Spark

Wang Rui musician analyzed the use of the flute in Bizet's operas.

Joann presented a comparative lecture on Schumann's two 1849 oboe works: Three Romances (Op. 94) and Allegro and Andante (Op. 70).

Zhou Sijia explored the psychology behind "Anxiety on the Strings: How Early Experiences Shape Music Performance Anxiety."

Zhou Xu and Fan Liao delivered a powerful performance of works by Shostakovich.

Fan Liao and Zhang Xinyue presented solo piano works by Chopin and Rachmaninoff, and Haydn and Albanian Berg, respectively.
The event, beautifully supported by the exceptional piano artistry of Liu Xiaqian Gege and the instrumental collaborations of fellow Beihuang musicians, facilitated a profound exchange and fusion of diverse musical arts. It perfectly embodied the "Sound-Knowing Action" series' mission to explore the boundless possibilities of music.
